This structured training programme provides qualifying individuals with the skills, knowledge, and experience to serve as Metro Police Officers in the City of Johannesburg. Successful applicants will undergo intensive training and, upon completion, will be deployed to maintain law and order across the city.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the JMPD training programme, applicants must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Possess a Grade 12 certificate (Senior Certificate) or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification
- Reside within the Johannesburg Metropolitan area (proof of residence required)
- Hold a valid Code B South African driver’s licence (no learner’s licences accepted)
- Be aged between 18 and 35 years
- Be in good physical and mental health (supported by a certified medical report)
- Have no criminal record or civil judgments related to fraud or corruption
- Be willing to undergo background checks and biometric vetting
- Be fluent in English
- Be willing and able to carry a firearm and wear a full police uniform
- Pass a fitness assessment prior to training

Training Programme Overview
The training programme spans 18 months and combines classroom instruction with practical, on-the-ground experience. Trainees are expected to comply with:

- Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) training requirements
During the training period, participants will receive a monthly stipend as determined by City policy.
Training Location:
All training will take place at the official JMPD Training Academy, operated by the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Public Safety.
Post-Training Appointment
Upon successful completion of the programme, trainees will:
- Be officially appointed as Metro Police Officers
- Take the oath of office, in line with municipal regulations
- Be assigned to various regions within Johannesburg, based on operational needs
