Launched by NYDA and SAYouth as part of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI), this programme is designed to empower unemployed youth by providing meaningful community service roles—along with a stipend.
What is the NYS Programme?
The National Youth Service (NYS) is a government-led initiative focused on youth development through:
- Community service
- Skills development
- Work readiness
Participants serve in various sectors, including health, education, safety, and environmental projects, while earning a stipend and gaining valuable work experience. Phase IV of the programme has been expanded to support even more youth, particularly those aged 18–35 who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET).
Opportunities in NYS Phase IV
The latest phase focuses on community-based service roles such as:
- Early Childhood Development support
- Environmental clean-up and food gardens
- Safety and community policing
- Health promotion at clinics and in communities
- Education support in schools, libraries, and learning centres
Duration: 6 to 9 months
Working Hours: 16 hours per week
Stipend: R23.19 per hour
Additional Benefits: Personal development training, career guidance, and soft skills workshops

You are eligible if you:
- Are a South African citizen aged 18–35
- Are currently unemployed and not enrolled in school or training
